How to choose the right EV charger

Eight questions narrow the choice quickly. Each one links to the detail if you need it.

1. What power supply do you have?

Single-phase power suits a charger of about 7 kW; three-phase allows up to 22 kW. If you're not sure, a licensed electrician can tell you. See single-phase vs three-phase charging.

2. Do you have solar, or plan to?

If you want to charge from excess solar, choose a charger that does it out of the box or with a supported add-on. See solar EV charging.

3. What can your car accept?

Every charger we sell uses the Type 2 connector, so check your car has a Type 2 port. Then check its maximum AC charging rate: there's no speed benefit in a charger more powerful than your car accepts.

4. Tethered cable or socket?

A tethered charger has its cable permanently attached: unhook it and plug in. A socket (untethered) charger needs your own Type 2 cable, which keeps the wall tidy and lets you choose the cable length. The Evnex X22, myenergi zappi and Smappee EV Wall come in both; the Evnex E2 range and myenergi zappi GLO are tethered.

5. Where will it be mounted?

Measure from where the charger will go to your car's charging port, allowing for how you park, and choose a cable long enough to reach comfortably. If the charger will be outdoors, check the manufacturer's installation requirements. The Smappee EV Wall is rated IP54 and IK10 for indoor and outdoor use. You can preview any charger on a photo of your wall with See It On Your Wall.

6. How will it connect?

App control, scheduling and solar features rely on a connection. If Wi-Fi is weak where you park, look at chargers with 4G or Ethernet.

7. One EV or more?

If you'll run more than one charger, or your home's supply is tight, load management shares or limits the power so you don't overload it.
